THE POSITION

Under general supervision, this temporary, unclassified, part-time position performs a variety of non-hazardous support functions for the Fire Department while attending school. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the job include, but are not limited to: Makes presentations, including Glendale Residents Informed Program (GRIP) presentations. Provides CPR instruction. Conducts station tours. Assists with recruitment outreach, training and evaluation. Provides major incident support. Provides Environmental Management Center collection assistance. Participates in special details, including fire road maintenance and Fire Prevention Bureau. Participates in mandatory didactic training. Provides customer service, both in person and over the phone to the public and internal City employees. Assists with answering telephones, maintaining equipment, filing, copying and researching documents. Maintains station facilities. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Ability to read, write and comprehend directions in English.

Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.

Ability to learn firefighter technology.

Ability to effectively provide customer service to the public and internal City employees.

Ability to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per month.

Ability to complete a minimum of one 24-hour ride-along on a fire company per month.

Ability to speak before groups and effectively present training programs.

Ability to learn C.P.R.

Ability to operate computer equipment.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.

Ability to resolve interpersonal conflicts.

Ability to correct misunderstandings.

Ability to learn City geography and street layout.

Knowledge of basic math operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
Must be at least 19 years of age.

Must be in good physical condition.

Willingness to assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.

Willingness to work overtime as requested.
Bilingual abilities (speak, read and write) in languages spoken in the community highly desirable.
Must be of good moral character without past history of involvement in criminal activity or other unacceptable conduct.
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Graduation from high school or attainment of GED or CHSPE certificate.
Concurrent college attendance is required with a G.P.A. of at least 2.0.
Emphasis in Fire Science or a related field highly desirable. SEE NOTE BELOW.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Completion of EMT-1 course within one (1) year of employment as a Fire Cadet.

Ability to successfully pass the standard physical agility test within one (1) year of employment as a Fire Cadet.

TATTOO POLICY: Unless otherwise exempted, no employee of the GFD shall have any visible tattoos or other skin markings.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION

A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on all finalists, which will review and verify personal history including, but not limited to financial responsibility, criminal history, drug use history, driving record, and verification of application materials. Significant issues or omissions in the above-stated areas may be grounds for disqualification. Background investigation will include a polygraph.
LICENSE

Valid California Class C Driver's License is required with an acceptable driving history.
NOTE

An equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements. Attainment of an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree may substitute for the concurrent college attendance requirement.
SELECTION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a written and an oral, with the written as a qualifying step and the oral worth100%. The final step of the selection process will be the Fire Chief’s Orals, which will be pass/fail. Any examination will be to evaluate the candidate’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and personal fitness for the position. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the above stated examination components and/or weights. Should this be necessary, the candidates will be notified of the specific examination components and weights prior to the administration of any examination. In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, the City of Glendale requires that all new employees provide documentation to establish both work authorization and identity. TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. The City of Glendale conforms with State and Federal obligations to make reasonable accommodation for applicants and employees with disabilities. The Human Resources Division asks that it be advised of special needs at least five days prior to the first test part so that a reasonable accommodation may be made. APPLICANTS WHO HAVE FAILED EITHER THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION OR THE ORAL INTERVIEW MAY REAPPLY AFTER THREE (3) MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF THE EXAM FAILED. APPLICANTS WHO HAVE PASSED BOTH THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS, BUT WISH TO BE RE-TESTED MAY DO SO AFTER SIX (6) MONTHS OF THEIR ORAL BOARD INTERVIEW. APPLICANTS WHO FAILED THE BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION OR WERE NOT SELECTED AFTER THE CHIEF’S ORALS MAY REAPPLY AFTER (1) YEAR FROM THE DATE OF DISQUALIFICATION.
