WAGE $19.08 - $24.95 per hour

THE POSITION

Under general supervision of the Program Supervisor, this position is responsible for professional work in planning, organizing and implementing the goals and objectives of the City’s smoking restrictions ordinance. This position will work primarily as a street outreach worker, providing information face-to-face with clients. Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: educates residents, businesses, and visitors about the new smoking restrictions ordinance primarily through face-to-face contact, but also through the development of flyers, newspaper releases, public service announcements and personal contacts; maintains records and submitting reports and program evaluations relating to smoking restrictions outreach; supervises and trains volunteers assisting with neighborhood outreach; provides staff support to community groups, boards and committees; makes public presentations upon request; fosters a teamwork environment; assist the Public Education team with other outreach and education projects, special events and community meetings. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Must be able to implement the City’s smoke-free public places ordinances in an effective, yet sensitive manner. May perform other duties as assigned or as the situation may require. May require working evenings and weekends.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: salesmanship, community public relations, word processing, spreadsheet and database software; resources needed to keep programs running smoothly.

Skill in: effective verbal and written communications both on a one-to-one and a group basis.

Ability to: communicate effectively to diverse client communities, including business owners, restaurant patrons, tourists, property managers, and apartment renters; read, write and comprehend directions in English; communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing; work independently; operate a personal computer; read, coach, instruct, supervise and motivate others; review and evaluate employees’ job performance; provide clear work instruction; exercise judgment and discretion in problem situations; foster a teamwork environment; establish and maintain smooth working relationships with fellow employees and the public; plan, organize, coordinate, implement and evaluate community outreach and education programs; speak before community groups. Knowledge, experience and skill in appropriate customer service practices; ability to work independently with no on-site supervision; work flexible hours; Must enjoy working with people.

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Willingness to: work overtime as requested; assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment; work an adjusted schedule as requested; follow through on citizen concerns and work assignments.

EXPERIENCE

Two years of increasingly responsible experience in education, social services, media or related field.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

Sixty (60) Semester Units of college coursework in a closely related discipline. Bachelor’s degree in education, social services, media, public relations is desirable.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bilingual ability in a language or languages commonly spoken in the Glendale community, such as Armenian, Spanish, Korean, etc, is desirable.

LICENSE

A valid Class C California driver's license is required.

An equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements.
SELECTION PROCESS
